Status: Installed and Operational
Operational Date: 13/12/2024

Overview

Our Bruker M4 TORNADO PLUS is a high-resolution micro-XRF system for rapid, non-destructive elemental analysis and mapping of a wide range of materials.

CMEH by using of  M4 TORNADO PLUS can support a wide range of geological, mineralogical and materials characterisation applications, including the analysis of rocks, ores, drill cores, slags, metals, recycled materials, ceramics, archaeological materials and other complex samples.

Key Features

  • Micro-XRF elemental analysis and mapping with a focused X-ray beam
  • X-ray tube: Rh target, up to 50 kV / 30 W, Two silicon drift detectors (SDDs)
  • Point analysis, line scans and 2D elemental mapping
  • Sample holders and stages suitable for applications including thin sections and drill cores
  • M4 Tornado software for quantitative analysis and layer-thickness calculations
  • AMICS software for automated mineralogical analysis

Applications

The system can support a broad range of applications, including:

  • Geological and mineralogical characterisation
  • Elemental mapping of rocks, ores and drill cores
  • Mineral phase and texture characterisation (AMICS)
  • Metals, slags and advanced materials, Archaeological materials, Ceramics, glass and other synthesised materials
  • Rapid screening and targeted analysis to support further laboratory characterisation

Analytical and Consultancy Support by CMEH

Where required, consultancy and data interpretation support can also be provided by relevant subject-matter specialists within Camborne School of Mines (CSM), . This may include interpretation of micro-XRF data and integration with other geological, mineralogical and materials characterisation techniques.

If you require Micro-XRF analysis or would like further information about the capabilities and services available, please contact the CMEH team.
