Mineralogical Analysis
Our mineralogical analysis services encompass the identification and quantification of valuable and gangue minerals in ores. We utilise automated mineralogy techniques, including Bulk Modal Analysis, Deportment, Detailed Liberation, GSD, Associations, Theoretical Mineral Liberation, and Particle Imaging, to provide accurate and detailed insights. Our ore characterisation services predict the behaviour of minerals during ore processing, ensuring optimal performance. Additionally, we offer mineralogical descriptions and quantitative analyses of mill products, as well as the quantification of coal, graphite, and industrial fuel ash. We further enhance our analysis through ancillary techniques such as XRD.
Petrographic Analysis
Our petrographic analysis services are essential for examining concrete, mortar, and render to identify degradation factors. We also specialize in examining rock, aggregate, building stone, and slate. Our Mundic Screening Tests assess building structures suspected of containing ‘mundic’ concrete, while our IS465 Screening Tests (Suite A, Suite B, and Suite C) are conducted under the guidance of IS465 approved engineers to ensure compliance and safety.
Sample Preparation
Petrolab excels in materials preparation, producing petrographic thin sections from samples and specimens of rock, aggregate, concrete, and other similar materials. We are proud to operate the first Pelcon Automatic Thin Section Machine in the UK, delivering high-quality thin sections. Our research-driven approach has enabled us to push the boundaries of sample preparation by implementing new resin technologies and unique powder preparation techniques for polished blocks. Our capabilities include representative sample selection, preparation of low sample masses, successful preparation of coal, graphite, and fuel ash for automated mineralogy, de-agglomeration techniques, and cutting-edge impregnation to combat density settling.
At Petrolab, our mission is to provide our clients with accurate, reliable, and insightful analyses that drive informed decision-making and successful outcomes. We are dedicated to advancing the field of mineralogical and petrographic analysis through continuous innovation and exceptional service.
Meet our Technical Director: James Strongman
As Technical Director, James Strongman leads on the technical development at Petrolab. He has been with Petrolab since 2001, subsequently purchasing the company in 2006. During his 20 years with the company, he has gained a wide spectrum of experience in the analysis of materials, ranging from concrete and man-made stone replacements to precious and rare earth metals found in electronic scrap. His specialist field is metalliferous ores, and he has developed a broad knowledge of the importance and application of mineralogy to mineral processing problems. Additionally, James and his team collaborate with the Critical Minerals Equipment Hub to provide an enhanced offering, further strengthening Petrolab’s capabilities and services.
